And this is her journey from the women\u2019s shelter to the CEO\u2019s chair<\/strong>. <\/em><br \/><\/p> \r\n<br \/><br \/>\r\n \r\n \r\n<p>\u201cI created my own big break,\u201d remarks Brandi Leifso, the founder and CEO of <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.evio.ca\/\&quot;">Evio Beauty Group<\/a>, in an <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.flare.com\/how-i-made-it\/brandi-leifso\/\&quot;">interview with Flare magazine<\/a> in 2018. <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/eviobeauty.com\/\&quot;">Evio Beauty<\/a> (formerly Evelyn Iona) is Brandi\u2019s line of clean and green cosmetics, worth over a million dollars. The story of Brandi and Evio Beauty has been celebrated by many for its unique and challenging origins. <br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>Battling domestic violence in an abusive relationship, Brandi sought refuge in a safe house at age 21. This was her second stint there. \u201cI dropped out of school at 14. I didn\u2019t have the typical happy upbringing, but I was in survival mode and did what I had to do ,\u201d <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y3p0jqYqdHw\&quot;">she recalls<\/a> at an event hosted by <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/happyonmondays.com\/\&quot;">Happy Monday<\/a>. <br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>\u201cWhile I was in the shelter, I needed something to distract me from my situation. I had daydreamed many times about starting a makeup line. I drew inspiration from my surroundings. I envisioned a cosmetics company that would help women in a direct way,\u201d she tells <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/torontolife.com\/city\/life\/living-shelter-running-cosmetics-company-six-years\/\&quot;">Toronto Life<\/a>. &nbsp;<br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>She created Evio Beauty Group in late 2014 from the shelter. The power of conscious choices during those years of personal turmoil shaped both Brandi and her cosmetics line. She shopped around her catalog of makeup products that didn\u2019t exist to local stores in Vancouver and convinced them to pay upfront. Evio Beauty was bootstrapped using those pre-sales, she reveals in separate interviews to <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/torontolife.com\/city\/life\/living-shelter-running-cosmetics-company-six-years\/\&quot;">Toronto Life<\/a> and <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/life\/style\/you-re-gonna-want-to-know-evio-canada-s-eco-friendly-answer-to-glossier-1.4392970\&quot;">CBC.<\/a> <br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>\u201cI barely paid myself for the first three years. Sometimes I sold my furniture\u2014or even my next meal\u2014to pay for more lip gloss stock. But here is what I\u2019ve learned from that: don\u2019t take a permanent solution for a temporary problem, sacrifice is necessary and everything changes when there is more money involved,\u201d <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.flare.com\/how-i-made-it\/brandi-leifso\/\&quot;">she tells Flare.<\/a> <br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>Today, Evio Beauty Group is backed by venture capital, and has a partnership with licensed marijuana producer Aurora Cannabis for a new hemp and cannabis infused skincare line. Evio Beauty is also the only Canadian company to be accepted into Sephora\u2019s 2018 Accelerate Program that supports women founders of cosmetic companies. <br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>A dollar from every sale at Evio Beauty goes to the Canadian Women\u2019s Foundation to advance equality efforts. Apart from the cosmetics line, Brandi has also nurtured the Evio Community, an online platform for women to share stories on feminism, wellness, entrepreneurship, and more. <br \/><\/p> \r\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve found that women tend not to share the darker parts of our lives because we\u2019re afraid of being seen as vulnerable or weak\u2014a fear that can be especially hard to tackle in business. But there\u2019s strength in sharing how we\u2019ve overcome challenges.
