For Ontario business owners, one of these steps is getting your <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/taxes\/business-number.html\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business number (BN)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll go over why this number is important, how to determine if you need one for your business, and how you can quickly and easily register for a BN in Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a business number (BN)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nine-digit business number is a unique program account identifier associated only with your business. It streamlines how your business deals with the federal government of Canada and gives entrepreneurs access to important government program accounts, such as payroll.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your Ontario business number is issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), rather than by a provincial body.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need to obtain this number regardless of whether you&#8217;ve chosen <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.ownr.co\/product\/incorporation\&quot;">incorporation<\/a> or sole proprietorship as your business structure, though the specific tax accounts you&#8217;ll register for may differ between these two options. Incorporation typically involves more complex tax considerations and potential benefits, while a <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.ownr.co\/product\/sole-proprietorship\&quot;">sole proprietorship<\/a> offers a simpler framework that aligns your business taxes with your personal tax return.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is a business number the same as an Ontario Business Identification Number (BIN)?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business number is not the same thing as your Business Identification Number (BIN). When you <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.ownr.co\/blog\/register-business-name\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">register your business name<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and obtain a Business Name Registration (previously called an <a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.ownr.co\/blog\/master-business-licence\/\&quot;">Ontario Master Business License<\/a>), you are assigned a nine-digit BIN number that is used by the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business Services to identify provincial business accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0You will typically refer to your BIN number when communicating with the provincial government about your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is a BN the same as an HST number?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A CRA business number and an HST number contain the same digits, but they end differently and serve different purposes. A business number is nine digits, whereas an HST number is the same nine digits followed by RT 0001.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When does a business need a BN?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business needs a BN when they incorporate or when they need to register for any CRA program accounts. The most common CRA program accounts that your business may require are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.ownr.co\/blog\/do-you-have-to-register-for-the-gst-hst-what-you-need-to-know\/\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GST\/HST<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if your business collects and remits GST or HST<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payroll deductions, if your business has any employees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporate tax income, if your business is incorporated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Import\/Export, if you import goods or export goods or services through your business<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.ownr.co\/blog\/sole-proprietorship-and-how-to-register\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sole proprietors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who don\u2019t have employees will probably need a BN, as all businesses with revenues exceeding $30,000 per calendar year are required to charge tax and remit it to the government. To do this, your business will require a BN.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When does an individual need a business number?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While BNs are usually associated with businesses, there are some cases where individuals need BNs too, even if they don\u2019t consider themselves business owners. The most common case is when individuals hire employees, such as a nanny or personal assistant. For these employees to be placed on payroll, an individual needs a business number to access the government\u2019s payroll accounts program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business numbers and provincial programs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Ontario businesses, BNs are typically used for the federal CRA programs we outlined: GST\/HST, payroll accounts, corporate tax income, and import\/export accounts. However, the Ontario Ministry of Labour also <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.labour.gov.on.ca\/english\/about\/faqs\/business.php#usage\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uses BNs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as identifiers for Ontario companies. This means that you can use your BN to identify your business when communicating with the Ministry of Labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of registering for a business number<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registering for a BN gives you access to CRA government programs that enable you to engage in all kinds of business activity\u2014from hiring employees to selling your products or services outside of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another benefit is that it streamlines all these programs under <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.labour.gov.on.ca\/english\/about\/faqs\/business.php\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one business number<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead of having to keep track of a bunch of different account numbers, all of your CRA accounts will be associated with your BN.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each CRA program has a two-letter <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/businesses\/topics\/registering-your-business\/you-need-a-business-number-a-program-account.html\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program identifier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> code associated with it, and your unique number for each program will comprise your BN and this code. For example, the program code for the GST\/HST program is \u201cRT\u201d. Your GST\/HST number will just be your 9 digit BN, followed by RT and a 4-digit reference number (usually 0001).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business number example and format<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business number is nine digits, and the same number is used in the company\u2019s other CRA numbers with different suffixes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ownr-blog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Program-Identifier.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"77\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sample business number: 123456789<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sample GST\/HST number: 123456789 RT 0001<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sample payroll deductions number: 123456789 RP 0002<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of other account numbers which also utilize the BN with an accompanying suffix, including fuel charge (CT), excise duty (RD), excise tax and special levies (RE), air travelers security charge (RG), and insurance premium tax (RN).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I find my BN in Ontario<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find your business number (or check whether you have one if you\u2019re unsure) by logging into your <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/e-services\/e-services-businesses\/business-account.html\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CRA My Business Account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can create or login to a CRA account using either a user ID and personal access code or by using one of their many sign in partners, which include banks and credit unions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to register for a BN in Ontario<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The easiest way to register for a business number in Ontario is to use the CRA\u2019s <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/businesses\/topics\/registering-your-business\/business-registration-online-overview.html\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Registration Online (BRO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> service. If you prefer, you can also complete an <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/forms-publications\/forms\/rc1.html\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RC1 form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and mail or fax it to your <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/corporate\/contact-information\/tax-services-offices-tax-centres.html\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearest tax services office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
