You got into business to give yourself <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> freedom, not to push yourself into a terrible choice between your success, free time, and relationships. Here are six ways to help balance your entrepreneurial ambition with your relationship goals (in ways that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eat up all of your time).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Clarify what kind of relationships you want<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, so you want great relationships. But what kind?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romantic?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friendship?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mentor\/mentee?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents\/grandparents?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many types of healthy relationships out there\u2013\u2013it\u2019s not always about finding a spouse or partner. In fact, people have known for years that <\/span><a href="\&quot;https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/serenitygibbons\/2018\/07\/06\/entrepreneurs-keep-your-business-close-and-your-friends-closer\/?sh=7105e8272adf\&quot;"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entrepreneurs with friendships do better<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than entrepreneurs who try to ride solo. The same goes for entrepreneurs with healthy romantic relationships, but that doesn\u2019t mean you need to rush to the altar anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before worrying about how to balance your relationship goals with your business ambition, first identify what those relationship goals are and realize these goals will change over time as people move in and out of your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Realize clients can become friends<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because someone starts off as a client doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t become a friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you will have boundaries as long as you work together in a professional capacity. However, don\u2019t write off a client just because they are a client.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of compartmentalizing a person based on their role in your life right now, think of each conversation as a chance to grow. That may mean more client work on a professional level, but it could also mean a blossoming friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re concerned about crossing a line, you can hold off on becoming besties and sharing all your secrets. You don\u2019t need to be that level of friend with a client, but you can still get enormous relationship fulfillment and a sense of connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Identify your non-negotiables<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running a business will take every second you have and every ounce of energy you give it. So if you truly want to balance your business with your relationships, you need to set your own ground rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some boundaries or \u201cnon-negotiables\u201d entrepreneurs set, depending on their lives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being home for dinner with their kids (or taking kids to school\/picking them up).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending at least one hour a day hanging out with their partner alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritizing a hobby or going to the gym a few times a week (bonus points if you do this with others, but even doing it alone can help you refresh for the moments you spend with others).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>After you know your non-negotiables, you can figure out what\u2019s necessary to make them a reality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outsource some work to free up your time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn down some work so you don\u2019t get overwhelmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take days off (you don\u2019t need to communicate this with your clients in every case. As long as you meet clients\u2019 deadlines, they don\u2019t necessarily need to know whether\u00a0 you\u2019re working every day).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you name and prioritize the things that matter in your relationships, it\u2019s a lot easier to let the little things\u2013\u2013like working late on a random Tuesday\u2013\u2013slide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Use technology<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve got a lot on the go and are worried your brain can\u2019t handle it, use technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entrepreneurs make tons of little decisions every day and do a bunch of seemingly random tasks depending on what pops up. That doesn\u2019t leave much mental energy for remembering the small details of multiple relationships. You are not less ambitious for wanting your relationships to thrive. If anything, you are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ambitious for wanting to achieve things in a shorter amount of time so you can focus on your relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Time-block your way to relationship success<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entrepreneurs often live and die by their calendars. Use that to your advantage when it comes to balancing relationships with business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your calendar, block off times to focus on relationships. These can align to your non-negotiables, too. For example, if a non-negotiable is having dinner with your kids, then block off 4 to 7 p.m. so you can eat with them and relax a bit before jumping back into work for the evening. Or, if you want to spend a whole day with your partner or family, you could even try not working Fridays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some time-block strategies you can use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recurring meetings: the same time every week (e.g. Friday nights are date nights).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recurring blocks: the same time every day (e.g. 4 to 6 p.m. is dinner time).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ad-hoc in advance: knowing when something is coming up (e.g. every March 17th is your anniversary so you don\u2019t work that day).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key is to respect your calendar\u2019s personal times just as you would a client meeting or open business hours. In other words, you have to do it. This isn&#8217;t an appointment you can skip at will; it\u2019s an obligation just like any other.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationships are business drivers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are hardwired as humans to desire and value relationships.
